Day 5

Last night was our first real experience of feeling the roller coaster of highs and lows that people talk about with preterm babies.

After settling in at Deborahs house and being so relieved to have left the hospital with a little good news we trucked back over to the NICU for Barnaby’s 8pm care time to read to him and say good night.

Immediately on arriving it was difficult. The constant beeping of sensors brought Ana to a difficult place thinking about her own emergency surgery and how  we ended up here. Then the head doctor on the floor asked to speak with us and we learned that they had discovered a brain bleed via ultrasound and it felt like all of our good news from neurology was back in question.

The doctor assured me that bleed was not severe but any brain bleed is a cause for concern. Today they are giving him a day-off knowing that his little brain is sensitive and that probably the best thing for it is to rest and sleep and heal. They have ordered another ultrasound for tomorrow and also an MRI to be done soon that will tell us more but in the meantime he is making progress in other areas. His respiratory is on track to move back to the conventional respirator, his blood responded well to a transfusion that he had this morning. His blood pressure is up to normal and stabilized there. There is still a lot  to be hopeful about and no truly bad news, just worrisome findings that put the fragility of this situation into light.
