NEC, Day 9

Today we met with the new “attending” doctor who is in charge of the NICU this week. She was incredibly personable and had lots of good of things to say. In general Barnaby is doing well. Most of his concerns at this point are within the realm of normal for a baby born at 29Continue reading “NEC, Day 9”

Day 7

We had a very good meeting with neurology this morning. The second MRI confirmed the findings of the first one that there are no major signs of damage. His brain bleed is persistent for the time being but is in the ventricles which are the best place for it to be and allows them toContinue reading “Day 7”

Day 5

Last night was our first real experience of feeling the roller coaster of highs and lows that people talk about with preterm babies.  After settling in at Deborahs house and being so relieved to have left the hospital with a little good news we trucked back over to the NICU for Barnaby’s 8pm care timeContinue reading “Day 5”

Day 4

Ana goes home today to Deborah’s house. We are very excited to get her some fresh air and to be with family.  We just were with Barnaby for the morning rounds when a huge team of doctors goes room to room and status updates the oncoming shift so that the tired ones can go home.Continue reading “Day 4”

NICU, Day 3

The NICU is an incredible place. The doctors and nurses who work here are both compassionate and knowledgeable. They have 64 rooms and a huge team of people. At one point during the early moments of Barnabys life I counted 12 people working hurriedly in his room and they still took time to part theContinue reading “NICU, Day 3”

Neurology, Day 3

Our big neurology meeting was a huge sigh of relief.   The doctors didn’t see the major abnormalities that they expected to after Barnaby’s birth story. They still want to do another MRI in a couple of days but they are “cautiously optimistic” about a possible best case scenario.  The neurology team removed his EEGContinue reading “Neurology, Day 3”

Self Care, Day 3

The biggest news this morning is that Ana slept a night for the first time in weeks. She is eating and hydrating and pumping breast milk.  Barnaby had a stable night and is still working towards the respiratory goals that will allow him to get an MRI.  Yesterday we met a volunteer from a parentContinue reading “Self Care, Day 3”

Day 2

Ana is up and walking about. Her situation today compared to yesterday is night and day. Her recovery is speeding along.   Yesterday we had a through the glass viewing of Barnaby but today we may be able to hold him. His respiratory situation is improving by small markers. He is also medicated for someContinue reading “Day 2”

Day 1

Today has been unbelievably hard.  Ana is doing well and is getting some much deserved sleep in the postnatal unit.  Barnaby is alive and his outcome is uncertain. The doctor used the word “stable” but only after many hours of interventions. He is breathing on a ventilator and his heart is beating and he isContinue reading “Day 1”
